Frequently asked questions - 8C to 14U

(8U FAQ below)

My child will be 8 years old by May 1st, what are my options for baseball?

8 year olds can choose to try out for the 8 competitive (8C) team(s) during our normal tryouts in July of each year for the following spring season.  If they do not make the 8C team(s) then they can play 8U Instructional Kid Pitch.

I want my child to try out for the 8C team, what do I do?

You will need to get your child registered by the July deadline and pay the initial registration fee.  Go to NJJBA.org and click on Register Now.  Make sure you are registering for the correct season as we typically have Spring and Fall open at the same time.

What if my 8 year old does not make the 8C team?

You will be notified that your child did not make the team and the registration will be changed over to the 8U Instructional Kid Pitch.  You will be responsible for the difference in payment.  We will also stop the automatic withdrawals, for the rest of the 8C registration fee, from the credit card.

My child will be 9 by May 1st, what are my options for baseball?

All 9 year olds are required to try out at our normal tryouts in July, even if your child played on the 8C team this year.  We have a panel of evaluators that evaluate each child based on skills.  We then rank each player based on their evaluation and place them in groupings of 11 to 12 kids.  Each 9-year-old coach that is identified will also have input as to where the players land.  All 9 year olds will make a team.

What are the levels of play for 9 year olds?

NJ Tournament-Only, NJ League - AAA, AA National, and AA American

What is NJ Tournament-Only?

NJ Tournament-Only teams do not play in league games.  They play tournaments only.

What is the difference between all of the different levels of Baseball?

AAA National – The highest level competitive teams.  They play in league and also in some tournaments.  Tournament play is a collective agreement between the coaches and parents.

AAA American - The second highest level competitive teams. They play in leagues and also in some tournaments. Tournament play is a collective agreement between the coaches and parents.

AA National – The third highest level competitive teams.  They play in league and possibly some tournaments but not as many as AAA.

AA American – The fourth highest level competitive teams.  They play in league and typically do not play in tournaments, but could.

My child will be 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 by May 1st, what are my options for baseball?

Option 1 – If your child is already on a team they can stay on that team and are not required to tryout unless their coach is requesting it.

Option 2 – If your child is already on a team and wants to tryout for a higher level, they are required to attend tryouts in July.  If they do not make a higher level team they may stay on the same team.

Option 3 – If your child is already on a team and does not want to stay on that team they are required to tryout in July.

Option 4 – Your child can tryout for our Tournament Only teams (if available at their age level).  These tryouts are NOT the same as the regular tryouts in July.

Note: If a child chooses to leave their current team (and not return) there is a chance that they do not make a team.

What are the fees for the 8C team?

See registration page for fee schedules.

What are the fees for 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 year olds?

Same as 8C above.

What are the fees for the Tournament-Only Teams?

Tournament Only Team Fees are determined by the Coach and Team. Travel, Tournament Expenses, Uniforms, Etc.. Contribute to how much an individual player would be responsible for.  Coaches at their respective tryouts should provide you with an idea of the fees expected for the upcoming season.

How many practices are there during the season?

NJ reserves practice fields for each team.  Each team gets 2 practice fields a week during the season.  Practices are typically 2 hours long.

What time is practice?

Practices can be either 4 to 6 pm or 6 to 8 pm.  The coaches request the times and fields that best suit their schedule.

Where is practice?

We have practice fields all over Arvada / Westminster  It is up to the coach and available practice fields as to where your team will practice.

How soon do practices start after team formation?

Practices could start as soon as October for winter work in the IPF (Indoor Practice Facility).  Outdoor practices start typically the first week of March.

Is there a chance that my child will not make a team?

At 9 years old all of the kids who try out make a team.  If your child decides to tryout with option 3 (do not return to same team) then there is a possibility that they do not make a team.  If your child is new to our league and 10 or older it is also a remote possibility that your child does not make a team, this happens only on rare occasions.  Our established teams sometimes only need a few new players each year as most of their players return. We do however create wait lists and have formed new teams when enough players are gathered and we have a volunteer to coach the team.

What happens if we can’t make the tryout date?

There will possibly be a make up date, however, it is important to understand that teams are formed and the draft takes place after the main tryout in July.

What if we register and our child decides not to play after all?

If you register and tryout and your child makes a team then you decide not to play. The deposit is non-refundable.  If you register and tryout and your child does NOT make a team then the deposit is refunded.

Are uniforms provided?

For League Teams, NJ provides a jersey and hat.  Each family is responsible for the rest of the uniform (pants, socks, belt, cleats) and equipment.  Jerseys and hats are not provided for Tournament Only teams.
